Spinal injury management

Provide emergency care for suspected spinal injury

This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge required to minimise further injury to a casualty when applying first aid and waiting for emergency medical aid. It includes recognition and management of a suspected spinal injury, immobilising cervical spine, evaluating the need to move a casualty, preparing a casualty for transport, transporting and monitoring a casualty, and performing a casualty handover.
The unit is applicable to personnel from emergency services, volunteer organisations or organisations which provide a first aid service in an environment where there is a risk of spinal injuries.
Course content includes:
- Identify suspected spinal injury
- Immobilise cervical spine
- Evaluate need to move casualty
- Prepare casualty for transport
- Transport and monitor casualty
- Perform casualty handover
Pre-requisites
Learners must hold a current HLATID011 Provide first aid statement of attainment to attend this course. Learners will require English language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) skills.
Physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills which includes conducting spinal manual in-line stabilisation (MILS) techniques, kneeling on the floor to perform a log roll as part of a team , assisting a conscious casualty to supine position and using equipment to immobilise a casualty’s spine to transport them away from a hazard
Entry requirements
Learners will be required to provide a copy of their expiring Statement of Attainment on the day of their face-to-face course.

This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge required to administer restricted analgesics to provide pain management as part of a medically supervised first responder organisation. It includes identifying the need for analgesia; accessing, preparing and administering restricted pain relief such as analgesics according to medically endorsed protocols; performing casualty handovers and completing analgesic use requirements.
The unit is applicable for personnel from emergency services, volunteer organisations or organisations that provide a medically supervised first aid service.
Course content includes:
- Identify need for analgesia
- Access and prepare analgesic
- Administer analgesic
- Complete analgesic use requirements
- communication techniques and protocols used when handling and administering drugs
- contraindications and precautions for use of analgesic drugs
- debriefing and evaluation of incidents
- manufacturers’ guidelines and operating instructions
- organisational documentation, policies, procedures and requirements
- organisational protocols and procedures and legislation covering storage, disposal
- administering and administration of restricted drugs, including permits and/or licences
- principles of casualty pain assessment and management
- process for assessing a casualty to determine requirement for analgesia according to organisational policies and procedures
- WHS/OHS requirements, including risk mitigation

Learners undertaking the express course must have previously completed the PUAEME008 – Provide pain management (or its equivalent). Learners will be required to provide a copy of their expiring Statement of Attainment on the day of their face-to-face course.
Pre-course online learning required plus Face to face training which consists of theory presentations and a range of practical learning activities and scenarios.
Assessment activities will include completion of a first aid incident report form and medication register. In addition, learners will be required to participate in practical scenarios including effective use of pain management and handover to paramedics.
